Inside Out: Relating House to Garden, with Page Dickey and Katie Ridder

On site at the legendary in October 2021, renowned garden designer Page Dickey and acclaimed interior designer Katie Ridder delved into tips and tricks for integrating home and garden with Wethersfield’s Director of Horticulture Toshi Yano. Their intimate and entertaining conversation features their personal gardens as case studies for how to design interior and exterior spaces that enhance one another.

From Katie Ridder’s formal perennial garden that uses plants in varying volumes and heights to create an almost architectural extension of her beautifully designed home to Page Dickey’s legendary Duck Hill and its evolution over three decades, the potential for a garden to serve as a harmonious extension of the home is endless. This lecture explores the passions of incredible practitioners and gives an insider look into how they design their own homes and gardens. Page Dickey has been passionately gardening since her early twenties and has been actively writing about the subject for the last three decades. She has written eight books, most concentrating on aspects of garden design such as creating gardens that reflect their settings (Gardens in the Spirit of Place and Breaking Ground) or planning gardens as extensions of our homes (Inside Out), in each case illustrated by exceptional examples of gardens from around the country. Her new book, Uprooted: A Gardener Reflects on Beginning Again, describes leaving a beloved garden of thirty-four years, finding a home in the northwest corner of Connecticut, and falling in love with its land.

Page has been featured in House and Garden, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Horticulture, Elle Décor, Garden Design, and The New York Times and her garden, Duck Hill, has been featured in a variety of periodicals including The New York Times, House and Garden, Elle Décor, Vogue, and Garden Design. Page serves on the Board of Directors of the Garden Conservancy and is one of the two founders of its Open Days Program.

An interior designer with offices in New York City, Katie Ridder has always had a passion for gardening. She has been a member of the Garden Conservancy Society of Fellows since 2015 and was elected to their board of directors in 2018. Her formal perennial garden with greenhouse, cutting garden, and woodland garden at her country house in Millbrook, NY is a highlight of their Open Days program. She has co-authored a book, A House in the Country (Vendome, 2016), with her husband, architect Peter Pennoyer, chronicling their collaboration on their Millbrook house and garden. Katie’s work has been published in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Town & Country, and the New York Times. She is also the subject of the monographs Katie Ridder Rooms (Vendome, 2011) and Katie Ridder Rooms Encore (Vendome, 2020)
